EDMONTON -- Smoke billowed from a downtown apartment building where a man plunged four storeys but survived Wednesday.

The man, screaming in agony and writhing in the bushes, could be heard at the 10210 100 Ave. apartment building, Dwayne's Home, an affordable housing unit for those facing homelessness.

Witness Cherie Leniuk noticed smoke in the nearby building from her apartment balcony and called 911.

She then saw a man hanging out of the window. Eventually, she said, he couldn't hold on any longer and dropped from the fourth-floor suite.

"He let go," she said. "He couldn't hang on anymore."

District Chief Randy Shakura said the emergency call came in around 2:49 p.m., and was called a second-alarm blaze soon after.

Shakura said the converted hostel had 376 suites, currently housing 130 tenants.
