TORONTO - Chad Dickson gave his son Felix a chance for a future on his eighth birthday by donating a part of his liver to the child.

Father and son went under the knife Wednesday — Felix’s birthday — for the potentially life-saving operation.

“What a dad and what a husband. It has been a long fight, but we have gotten this far and feel victorious,” mom Charlene Dickson said at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children on Wednesday night.

The Campbellville, Ont., woman said her husband, the father of her five children, was doing fine in recovery and that doctors are also pleased with how Felix came through the surgery.

Felix was born with a liver condition called biliary atresia, a dangerous birth defect that obstructs the flow of bile. The condition can generally be corrected with a successful transplant.

The Children’s Miracle Wish had planned to send Felix on a trip to whale watch in Newfoundland with his family, but the January adventure had to be postponed as he took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted to hospital.
