ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. -- An Ontario judge has given the go-ahead to a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of people and businesses seeking damages as a result of the deadly Algo Centre Mall collapse here in 2012.

Justice Edward Belobaba certified the lawsuit Thursday.

Business operators John and Elaine Quinte, who were tenants in the mall at the time of the collapse, are the lead plaintiffs in the suit representing approximately 300 others.

The lawsuit names as defendants the mall’s current and former owners, several professional engineers and construction professionals, as well as the City of Elliot Lake and the Province of Ontario.

The judge said this case is ideally suited to being litigated as a class action.
