OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper promises the federal government will contribute up to $70 billion for municipal infrastructure over 10 years.

“As a result, provinces, municipalities and territories will now have unprecedented access to predictable, sustainable, federal infrastructure funds for a decade,” Harper said Thursday in the Stouffville, Ont., area north of Toronto.

The new funding plan is set to launch in the spring, just when cities are set to begin construction on major projects.

Harper wouldn’t comment on any specific projects that could be funded, such as extending Toronto’s subway northward, beyond the cities borders.

He said those are things that are negotiated between the three levels of government.
