CALGARY ─ Mounties have confirmed the death of a snowmobiler in an avalanche on Boulder Mountain near Revelstoke, B.C., Saturday.

Revelstoke RCMP said a group of three were near the mountain’s snowmobile cabin at about 3:30 p.m. when the avalanche occurred.

Const. Lesley Smith said one man was caught, the other two managed to avoid injury.

He was unconscious when he was found, and later died.

Smith also said the trio were among hundreds who had been on the mountain for the long weekend.

The identity of the victim was not immediately released.

The death has been handed over to the B.C. Coroner Service, Smith said, because it is not a criminal matter.

Saturday, the Canadian Avalanche Centre had listed the risk of avalanche for the region as considerable to high.

Smith noted avalanches in that area at this time of year are not uncommon.
