TORONTO -- It’s been tough sledding in Scugog in recent weeks as numerous snowmobilers have become entangled in steel wire that appears to have been deliberately strewn across groomed trails.

Durham Regional Police say the troubling trend began about a month ago near Blue Mountain Rd. and Hwy. 12.

Officers responded to the area around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 after a snowmobiler located a bundle of steel wire on the trail, police said Thursday.

“Three snowmobilers had become entangled in the wire,” police said in a statement.
