CALGARY -- A 12-year-old Saskatchewan girl died after hitting a tree while skiing in B.C. Thursday.

About 10:30 a.m., the girl, whose name hasn't been released, was skiing on a groomed, marked black diamond run called Millennium at Panorama Mountain Village in southeastern B.C. when she lost control and struck a tree on the side of the trail.

The girl, who was wearing a helmet, was skiing with her father.

He and a number of other skiers in the vicinity rushed to help.

Ski patrol arrived and began CPR and, just after 10:50 a.m., the girl and her dad were airlifted to the Invermere District hospital where she succumbed to head and internal injuries.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family," Panorama CEO and president Steve Paccagnan said. "This is a tragic accident and we are doing everything we can to assist the family during this trying time.

"We are all deeply saddened by this event and I want to thank the entire emergency response team for their quick response and professionalism.

"They did all they could to save this little girl."
