A man died and a woman was seriously injured after an avalanche in southeastern B.C. on Sunday, according to local media reports.

The pair was part of a group of four skiers that got caught in the slide in Stagleap Provincial Park, near Kootenay Pass, the Nelson Daily reports.

An attempted helicopter rescue was hampered by bad weather, so more than a dozen rescuers made their way in on skis late into the night.

Police confirmed Monday that a 28-year-old man had died, and a 27-year-old woman was hurt, radio station CKNW reported. The woman's condition was not immediately known.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a special alert last week, warning there was "significant potential for large, destructive avalanches" in the B.C. backcountry through Wednesday.
