OTTAWA - Ex-Liberal senators said Wednesday they are now free to work for Canadians and not the Liberal Party.

Ex-Liberal Sen. James Cowan said that since Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau forced all of the party's senators to sit as independents, they've realized they no longer have to worry about how their votes and opinions affect the Liberal Party.

Cowan said ex-Liberal senators are "still relevant" and introduced several measures Wednesday that he said will "open up" the Senate to Canadians.

The Wednesday caucus meetings that were once closed to the public will now be open "on a periodic basis," Cowan said.
