SARNIA, Ont. — Two people are now confirmed dead following Thursday’s deadly pileup on Hwy. 402 in southwestern Ontario.

Dozens of people were taken to hospital after a pair of 30-vehicle pileups that stretched for 2 kms, when sudden snow squalls took drivers by surprise.

The highway was closed for several hours on Thursday, with eastbound lanes reopened in the early afternoon.

The westbound lanes were still closed Friday morning. Police said they were expected to have the cleanup finished later this morning.

A 96-vehicle pileup on Hwy. 400 north of Toronto was cleaned up by Thursday night — enough to re-open the highway. Only minor injuries were reported there.
