OTTAWA - Though the HMCS Protecteur is being towed once again back to Hawaii after a fire rendered the vessel useless last week, the government's procurement process for new supply ships remains adrift.

A fire gutted the ship's engine room, and smoke and heat damaged surrounding compartments but authorities don't know what caused Thursday's blaze and an investigation continues.

The Canadian navy has only two supply ships - HMCS Protecteur and its sister ship, HMCS Preserver.
