MONTREAL -- The two Canadians listed on a flight manifest for a missing Malaysia Airlines plane had previously lived in Montreal.

Muktesh Mukherjee, 42, and Xiaomo Bai, 37, were a couple, and Mukherjee's Facebook page has several pictures of them with small children.

A friend of the couple told the Globe and Mail that the two met in China, and had lived in Montreal before moving back to Beijing.

Montreal real estate agent Robert Godmer knew the couple when they lived in Montreal.

"Mr. Mukherjee met Mrs. Bai in Beijing while on a business trip," Godmer told QMI. "She was his guide and his translator."

He said that the couple was "very nice and very sociable."

In 2004, Godmer "sold the condo they were living in. They then bought another one in Old Montreal and lived there for three or four years." He said the couple then moved to Chicago.

Mukherjee was vice-president of Chinese Operations for Xcoal Energy & Resources, an American coal company.

Xcoal CEO Ernie Thrasher told QMI in a brief statement that "Muktesh is a dear friend, colleague, and member of the Xcoal family. At this time, in respect to his family, I prefer to wait before issuing further comments."

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it disappeared, it is presumed to have crashed.

The plane still has not been found, but a trail of fuel measuring several-kilometres was seen off the southwest coast of Vietnam. Vietnam has sent rescue and recovery ships to the area to try to find the aircraft.
