CALGARY — After finding a winner while checking his lottery tickets at a Cochrane, Alta., convenience store last week, Michael Tkachyk drove home wondering what he and wife Deidre would do with $70,000.

Turns out, he was a little off, however.

“I checked it at the ticket checker, but I didn’t really know how much we’d won — there are no commas in the display,” he said.

Michael double-checked the ticket online when he got home, and to his surprise, it wasn’t $70,000 they’d won in the March 5 draw, but $7.2 million.

“It looked so good, I’ve never seen anything like that before,” he said.

Deidre wasn’t home, so Michael sent her a text.

“I said it was important,” he said.

“Then I texted again and said it was urgent.

“Then I said it was really urgent.”

When Deidre finally called home, Michael shared the exciting news.

“It was pretty amazing,” she said.

“It felt surreal, it still does.
