EDMONTON ─ In the wake of Premier Alison Redford's shocking resignation, Deputy Premier Dave Hancock will become Alberta's 15th premier in an interim role.

The decision was made by secret ballot during an early morning Progressive Conservative caucus meeting on Thursday that saw Tory MLAs hoping to "move forward" with a leadership race that will bring party renewal. Redford arrived later with her 12-year-old daughter, Sarah, in tow.

Redford will remain premier until Sunday evening when Hancock will be sworn-in and take over the post. Redford will continue to serve as the MLA for Calgary-Elbow, said Hancock.

He said he had a "transitional" conversation with Redford on Thursday, thanking her for her courage and vision for the province.
