CALGARY -- Relief filled the airwaves Friday after AMP Radio listeners voted to give away $10,000 rather than torch it.
Last week the Calgary radio station burned $5,000 cash in a city pet crematorium after 54% of voters supported destroying it through its “Bank it or Burn it” contest.
The money was doubled for the second round and 90.3 AMP Radio’s Ryan Lindsay, who co-hosts the morning show with Katie Summers, was relieved to reveal the results Friday.
“It’s a euphoric feeling when the week before was a feeling of absolute stunned shock and then this week you get that feeling of Calgary’s redemption just opening that envelope,” he said.
He said he had a feeling listeners would vote in favour of banking it this time around.
“Once people saw this was actually happening ... they got the idea this is something where you have to stand up and actually make something happen and they did, and they did it in beautiful fashion,” he said.
One lucky anti-burning voter was chosen to receive the cash, and another $10,000 cheque was written to The Children’s Wish Foundation in her name, Lindsay said.
The station has been vilified for the sensational promotional scheme, but Lindsay said the intention was to get people talking.
“The difference between us and everybody else is that we try to do things that make people actually have conversations,” he said, adding they knew some might be up in arms about the contest.
