OTTAWA — The sudden dismissal of Dimitri Soudas as the Conservative Party of Canada's executive director is a good thing, one of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's former advisers says.

"His departure will send a signal to ridings, volunteers, et cetera to keep (candidate nominations) clean and open," said Keith Beardsley, who was once Harper's deputy chief of staff.

Soudas was fired late Sunday amid suspicions he was throwing his weight around as a senior party executive to help his fiancee, Conservative MP Eve Adams, win the Tory nomination in the new Toronto-area riding of Oakville North-Burlington.
