BANFF, Alta. -- Two skiers are in serious but stable condition after being swept up in an avalanche at Sunshine Village ski resort Monday.

One of the injured was airlifted to Banff Mineral Springs Hospital and the other taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance after being transported down the mountain by snowmobile.

Both skiers are are expected to be transferred to hospitals in Calgary.

The slide was triggered at around 2 p.m. Monday in Sunshine’s Delirium Dive area, which has stringent requirements for those wanting to ski in the area, including knowledge and possession of avalanche safety equipment. The area’s conditions often change.

Crosbie Cotton, director of the National Parks Ski Areas Association, said an investigation is underway. The size of the avalanche or exactly how it was triggered are not yet known.

Sunshine Village is 144 km west of Calgary.
