CALGARY -- A teenager is dead after a mishap while training for a rodeo in a community southwest of Edmonton.

The 16-year-old from Turner Valley, whose name has not been released, was taking part in a bucking school, Thorsby Haymaker Centre president Dianne Miller explained.

Mounties and paramedics were called to the centre shortly before 5 p.m. local time.

Cpl. Corey Kyle said the youth was bucked from the horse he'd been riding before being struck by it.

"It appears as he was getting up off of the ground, he may have been struck by the horse," he said.

Kyle said the centre had a medic there before the RCMP or EMS arrived.

Bystanders performed CPR on the boy.
