TORONTO ─ Mayor Rob Ford now has disgraced Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson helping him run his re-election race.

In a surprise announcement Tuesday, Ford revealed that Johnson and Trailer Park Boys actor Sam Tarasco will be helping him on the campaign trail.

"I'd just like to welcome Cave from the Trailer Park Boys and Ben to City Hall," Ford said in front of the mayor's office. "I'm excited to have them on our campaign team and we're going to do a few events and I want to thank them for their support."

Johnson won an Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics but was stripped of it and the world record he set after he tested positive for steroids. Tarasco plays the character Sam Losco on the Canadian TV series Trailer Park Boys.

"Full support," Johnson said when asked what he'll be doing on the mayor's campaign.

Ford laughed off a question about how (Johnson) will get Ford across the finish line.

"We're working on it," Ford said.

"Everybody is going to help out in every way possible and they want to come out to events and they want to get votes. At the end of the day, that's what this election about is getting votes and putting my record out in front and they know I have a proven track record.”

Asked about Johnson's steroid scandal and whether it draws attention to his own drug issues, Ford ─ who has admitted to smoking crack cocaine and buying illegal drugs ─ said he supports Johnson "100%."

"We've all made mistakes in life, I support him from day one and that's the bottom line," Ford said.

Johnson ignored questions about why he was supporting Ford and quickly left City Hall.

"No comment," he said.
