MONTREAL — The soundly defeated Parti Quebecois has chosen Stephane Bedard as its interim leader.

The recently re-elected Chicoutimi MP, who received unanimous support Thursday night from the PQ caucus, was the treasury board president under former premier Pauline Marois.

“The election results did not meet our expectations,” Bedard said. “Nevertheless, we offer Quebecers a strong team of men and women who have the public’s best interest at heart.”

Separatists, meanwhile, have expressed a range of opinions about the future of the party and their movement.

"The elephant is now very much in the room, a significant section of the francophone electorate is repulsed by the referendum hypothesis," read a blog post by Jean-Francois Lisee.

He was among few PQ cabinet ministers to survive Monday's rout at the hands of the Quebec Liberal Party.
