Former finance minister Jim Flaherty will receive a state funeral on Wednesday in Toronto, the Prime Minister's Office has confirmed.

Flaherty, 64, died suddenly Thursday in his Ottawa condo of a heart attack.

He stepped down last month saying he wanted to focus on his private life, but said it wasn't for health reasons.

"Jim was a great friend and colleague, a dedicated family man, and an extraordinary minister of finance who sacrificed an enormous amount in his years of service to Canada and to Canadians," Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated in a release about the funeral.

Details weren't immediately released.

State funerals are normally reserved for present and former governors general, prime ministers and sitting cabinet ministers, the government's website states. The prime minister has the discretion to offer one for "any eminent Canadian."

The late NDP leader Jack Layton received a state funeral in August 2011.
