PORT HOPE, Ont. -- A 12-year-old Toronto boy in a stolen car was arrested Sunday after a police pursuit along Hwy. 401.

OPP Const. Steve Bates told QMI Agency that a general broadcast was issued to officers at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday about a Nissan Murano SUV stolen from the Centre Hastings, Ont., area.

At about 6 p.m., OPP were advised that a vehicle matching the description was involved in the theft of gas from a service centre on Hwy. 401 in the Trenton, Ont., area.

About 30 minutes later, an OPP officer spotted a vehicle matching the description and initiated a pursuit, which continued on Hwy. 401 and Northumberland County Rd. 2, eventually entering the Durham Region area, Bates said.

The SUV was traveling "well in excess of the speed limit" during the pursuit, Bates said.

The SUV was eventually stopped on County Rd. 2 in Newtonville, Ont., by police "using a combination of manoeuvres."

A spike belt was deployed but the vehicle stopped before going over it.

"It could have ended up a lot worse," Bates said.

The youth was held for bail facing charges including two counts of theft under $5,000, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
