Quebec City is the best city in Canada to be a woman while Edmonton is the worst, a new study from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says.

The rankings are based on how women and men fare in five areas: economic security, leadership, health, personal security and education.

Women earn the most in Ottawa, according to the researchers' numbers. That's at odds with Calgary, where women have the lowest levels of poverty in the country.

They have the highest life expectancy in Vancouver, and they have the highest stress levels in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo in Ontario.

Senior researcher Kate McInturff ranked 20 large metropolitan areas and said, while men and women have equal access to health care and education, "that hasn't translated into personal safety at home or promotion at work."

But McInturff warns women in her report that even Quebec City is no heaven.
