MONTREAL — Passersby plucked a man from the frigid waters of the St. Lawrence River after his canoe capsized near the Montreal suburb of Longueuil.

QMI Agency's sister news channel, LCN, captured dramatic chopper video of the man being pulled onto a dock and collapsing from hypothermia on Thursday evening.

The bystanders, one of whom is a nurse, called 911 and a police officer quickly arrived on scene. The nurse suggested a "skin to skin" technique.

Using a rescuer's body heat to gradually raise a hypothermia patient's temperature is known to reduce the risk of a heart attack.

Officer David Jutras pulled off his shirt and performed the technique until paramedics arrived.

The police officer said the 23-year-old's canoe capsized in high winds and he managed to swim to the dock before losing strength.

Paramedics took the canoeist to hospital. He was released Thursday night.
