OTTAWA — A L’Ange-Gardien, Que., man was seriously injured when his car exploded Monday night because he used a lighter to search for his cellphone, igniting vapours from leaky gas cans in the trunk, police say.

The explosion occurred around 10 p.m., after the 22-year-old man returned to his car to search for his phone, police said.

He suffered serious injuries to his face and arm. Paramedics rushed him to hospital in nearby Gatineau, Que. His injuries weren’t considered life-threatening.

The young man put the gas cans in the trunk earlier that evening, police said.
