Severely injured in a small plane crash at Calaway Park, a man was rushed to hospital in potentially life-threatening condition.

The man, who Mounties say is 39 years old, was the only person injured in the crash, which happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday along the parking lot of the amusement park located just west of Calgary.

“(He) crashed ... very, very close to the parking lot,” EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux said.

“It was actually off on the grass embankment, just off the road ... there’s a little curvy access road that’s just off of the main highway.”

Brideaux said it’s fortunate nobody else was injured in the incident.

“It was actually quite sparse. There were very few people in the area (at the time of the incident),” he said.

Currently it’s unclear what happened to cause the plane to crash. Mounties say the Transportation Safety Board is joining the investigation.

Witnesses are asked to call the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000.
