PC Leader Tim Hudak and MPP Lisa MacLeod had a “legal, social and moral” obligation to make the statements that led to Premier Kathleen Wynne’s $2-million libel lawsuit, their statement of defence says.

“As members of provincial parliament in Ontario...the defendants had a public duty in pursuing the Ontario electorate’s interest of probing and investigating any allegation of wrongdoing by the Ontario Liberal government or individuals within or outside of the government,” the statement of defence says. “These defendants have a duty to ‘ventilate’ their concerns through the media and directly to the Ontario electorate through electronic and other forms of communications.”
