OTTAWA — Aspiring politicians who don't support access to abortion on demand aren't welcome in the Liberal party, Leader Justin Trudeau says.

"I have made it clear that future candidates need to be completely understanding that they will be expected to vote pro-choice on any bills," Trudeau said Wednesday, just one day before the annual March for Life in Ottawa, which calls for the elimination of abortion.

He also says, with the exception of sitting MPs, anyone who hopes to carry the Grit banner in the 2015 federal election will have to pass an ideological test.

"We check on a number of issues," Trudeau said. "How do you feel about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? How do you feel about same-sex marriage? How do you feel about pro-choice — where are you on that? And we make sure that the people who are stepping forward are consistent with the Liberal party as it is now."
