A 50-year-old Thunder Bay, Ont., police officer died Wednesday after collapsing during a training exercise.

Const. Joseph Prevett was working with a new police dog, Timber, near Gravenhurst, Ont., when he collapsed around 10:45 a.m., the Thunder Bay Police Service said in a press release.

Prevett was taken to hospital and died a short time later.

He started his career with Peel Regional Police west of Toronto in 1998 and joined the Thunder Bay force in 2003. He was the service dog handler with the emergency unit.

Police said Prevett had a wife and family.

Funeral arrangements haven't been announced.
