TORONTO — Unilever announced Thursday it will close its Brampton, Ont., plant, putting 280 people out of work, and move the operation to Missouri.

The plant will ramp down production in late 2015 and close in March 2016.

“As more than 80% of the volume produced at (Brampton) is shipped to the United States, Unilever made the strategic decision to make its investment closer to where the bulk of the product is consumed,” Unilever Canada CEO John Le Boutillier said in a press release.

The plant just west of Toronto produces soups, sauces, sides and gravies under the Knorr and Lipton brands.

“This decision was not easily made, and in no way reflects the dedication or performance of our colleagues at the (Brampton) facility,” Boutillier said of the move to Independence, Mo.
