OTTAWA — Canada will pay homage to the heroes of our Afghan mission on Friday.

The National Day of Honour is to feature a virtually unprecedented combination and scope of events to pay tribute to the 158 Canadians who lost their lives during the 12-year Afghanistan mission.

More than 40,000 personnel travelled to the country to combat terrorism, build roads, train Afghan security personnel, restore schools, train teachers and vaccinate children.

Many events have been happening for weeks, to wrap up in the capitol Friday.

The Soldier On relay arrived in Ottawa from CFB Trenton on Wednesday, visited Gatineau City Hall and then Ottawa City Hall on Thursday.

The final runner in the 19-member team will arrive at Parliament Hill Friday halfway through the ceremony at Parliament Hill. The baton will be passed to last task force commander Gen. Dean Milner, who will then pass it to Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Thomas Lawson, and on to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The same will be done with the last Canadian flag flown in Afghanistan.

The event itself gets underway at 12:15 p.m. with the Parade of Honour at 12:30 p.m., ending at Parliament Hill at 1 p.m.

A moment of silence, a fly-by, displays by the Navy and of explosive ordinances and a field medical unit, are also on tap.

Everything is free and open to the public until 4 p.m.

In 12 years, more than 40,000 Canadian troops served in Afghanistan.

158 of those soldiers did not return home. They made the ultimate sacrifice and we remember them.
