EDMONTON — A person is dead and an Edmonton police officer injured in a west Edmonton shooting Sunday night.

Police say officers were on scene executing a warrant when an exchange of gunfire broke out at around 8:30 p.m. between a suspect and police.

“Our members were in the area attempting to execute a warrant on a subject. While attempting to execute that warrant there was an exchange of gunfire an during that exchange the subject was struck and pronounced dead on scene,” said Nicole Chapdelaine, acting Edmonton Police Service (EPS) inspector.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Reports say a male EPS officer was shot in the left calf and taken to hospital, but EPS would not comment on those reports.

Witnesses say they heard yelling and multiple gunshots were fired.
