MONTREAL — More than one in 10 women at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) have had at least one abortion, says a new study, raising concerns of a lack of proper sexual health education for Quebec students.

UQAM sexologist Sylvie Levesque reports that 12.5% of students surveyed last fall said they have terminated a pregnancy.

Of those who had an abortion, about 16% admitted to doing it twice, 7.1% had three and 4.4% have aborted four or more times.

Levesque's team surveyed 2,345 students and tabled the findings this week at Concordia University.

The data is consistent with previous findings from the University of Ottawa that indicate Quebec has one of the highest abortion rates the western world.

Federal and provincial data suggest just over one in four pregnancies in Quebec end in abortion, compared with one in five nationally.
