Declining enrolment should not mean the wrecker’s ball for school buildings, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says.

Horwath announced her party would set up a $60 million “Open School” annual fund to help local boards renovate and repurpose schools so that they can remain open, possibility for use by non-profits or community groups.

“At this point in time, school boards are left with no choices,” Horwath said Saturday, standing out front of Queen’s Park in Toronto before journeying to Kingston. “Both Conservatives and Liberals have left school boards with no choices but to shut down schools and tear them out of the communities. And people have been telling me across this province that that’s not what they want to see.”
