OTTAWA - With her last ounce of strength, a Gatineau, Que., mother handed her smoke-blackened baby over to firefighters and collapsed.

The pair are in serious condition in hospital after being rescued from an early morning blaze in their east-end Gatineau home Saturday morning.

It happened shortly after 3 a.m. The home is a large, two-storey semi-detached.

When firefighters arrived, a pair of adults and two children who were already outside said there was still a mother and her baby trapped in the building.

Chief Guy Dagenais said the rescued woman’s husband had already managed to rescue his son and had gone back into the home to get his wife and baby, but was unable to reach them.

Dagenais said the woman and baby were found, not far from the entrance.
