To stand where no other human being has ever trod before was not the goal — but Raphael Slawinski admits it’s still pretty cool to discover you’re the first.

“In a funny way it does matter, though I’m not sure why,” said Slawinski, a physics professor at Calgary’s Mount Royal University.

Just reaching the peak of Pakistan’s torturous K6 West, having taken the most treacherous route to the top of the 7,040-metre mountain, was a massive accomplishment for the Calgary mountaineer and his Canmore climbing partner Ian Welsted.
