EDMONTON - A 50-year-old woman is dead after colliding with a city garbage truck during the Thursday morning commute.

Traffic investigators were on scene after the collision just before 8 a.m. near 100 Avenue and 112 Street. The white bicycle was not crushed in the collision and remained on its side about four metres behind the parked garbage truck as investigators combed the scene.

Christopher Chan, Edmonton Bicycle Commuters executive director, said his day was off to a tough start after being flooded by calls on the woman's death.

Chan says 100 Avenue is the main East-West corridor for the downtown and he travels the route almost daily.

Regardless of whether the cyclist is known to other riders, the death of a fellow biker hits home.
