PORT HOPE, Ont. — Just the blackened skeleton frame remained of a charter bus after a spectacular fire gutted the vehicle on its way from Toronto to Ottawa on Monday morning.

About 50 seniors, mostly visiting from Australia, managed to escape unharmed.

A truck driver says the bus blew a tire just before the fire sparked.

Smoke could be seen for miles and a portion of the eastbound Highway 401 was closed while firefighters tried in vain to extinguish the flames.
