P.E.I. hotel bills will show Duffy's housing expenses were bogus: Mountie

OTTAWA — The RCMP says hotel records in Prince Edward Island will help prove Sen. Mike Duffy defrauded taxpayers with phony living expenses.

Cpl. Greg Horton filed court documents dated May 27, asking for authorization to collect a series of hotel bills and other records from the Great George Hotel in Charlottetown.

The hotel documents will show that Duffy didn't live at his P.E.I. cottage — his declared primary residence — during the winter, but rather stayed at the hotel when he was in P.E.I., Horton says.

Duffy is currently suspended from the Senate and under investigation for breach of trust and fraud after he accepted a government living allowance afforded to parliamentarians who don't live in Ottawa.

Horton said he believes Duffy lives in Ottawa, not his cottage in Cavendish, P.E.I.

Horton said during the 16 winter months he examined, between 2009 and 2012, he could only identify 35 nights that Duffy spent in P.E.I.
