OTTAWA - Tony Abbott used his first visit to Canada as Australia's Prime Minister to single out Stephen Harper's political legacy since being elected PM in 2006.

"I should also say to you, Stephen, how much of a guide you have been to centre-right political parties and to centre-right political leaders," Abbott, a fellow conservative who is in Ottawa drumming up trade opportunities, said Monday.

"I am happy to call you an exemplar of centre-right leadership."

Abbott spoke of historical ties between two countries he called multicultural, resource-driven federations that, together, can be a force for good in the world.
