CALGARY ─ The police dog that tugged at the nation's heartstrings while whimpering at his partner's funeral this week, is headed back to Alberta.

Danny, the K9 partner of Const. Dave Ross, one of three Mounties killed in Moncton, N.B., will carry on his police work, the RCMP announced Wednesday.

Ross became involved with the RCMP Police Dog Training Service Centre, based in Innisfail, Alta., in 2008. He began working with Danny on Dec. 4, 2012 and the pair began formal training on April 22, 2013. They graduated at the end of August of last year, meaning Danny had not even completed a year of service when Ross died on June 4, along with Const. Fabrice Gevaudan and Const. Douglas Larche.

Danny grabbed Canadians' attention Tuesday when he could be heard crying at the regimental funeral service for the officers in Moncton. Ross' wife Rachael Ross said she wants Danny to continue his work.

"Anytime Danny barked at home, it would be to get Dave to open the truck door so they could go to work," she said. "It wouldn't be fair to Danny to retire him as he loved his work as much as Dave did."
