TORONTO - The Sam the Record Man sign could be shining down one day on Yonge-Dundas Square.

A report going to the planning committee next week recommends the city and Ryerson University agree to display the restored sign on the roof of 277 Victoria St. - a city-owned building on the edge of the square.

Ryerson - which is building its new student learning centre on the site of the iconic Yonge St. music store - asked the city last year to amend the deal it had signed around the Sam's sign.

In the original deal, Ryerson agreed to put the sign back up either in the original Yonge location near Gould St. or on the school's library.

When Ryerson said last year both locations weren't possible, council sent the request back to city staff to hammer out a new proposal.

Now staff are recommending the sign go up on the city-owned building in Yonge-Dundas Square with Ryerson footing the bill for all the costs of installing the sign along with "all operational and maintenance costs associated with the sign."
