TORONTO -- Fears are mounting for the safety of a University of Toronto student arrested Monday in the high-risk Central Asian country of Tajikistan.

Alexander Sodiqov, a married father here on a student visa to pursue a doctorate degree at U of T's department of political science in Mississauga, Ont., was arrested Monday in Khorog, a city in southwestern Tajikistan that borders Afghanistan, suspected of espionage, said the university and Freedom House, an independent democracy watchdog.

Sodiqov, a native of Tajikistan, had been living in Toronto with his wife and toddler and was in his homeland to do research for the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, Ed Schatz of U of T's political science department said.
