OTTAWA -- Let the summer spending begin!

MPs officially hit the barbecue circuit at about noon Friday and won't be back until the House of Commons resumes sitting on Sept. 15.

And if you run into an MP from the governing party, the federal Conservatives, at a community barbecue, chances are they've shown up with a fat cheque from taxpayers.

Last year, the parliamentary summer was four months long, and in that period Conservative MPs participated in 510 spending announcements, handing out a combined $2.4 billion.

That's just a sub-set of the 4,800 cheques handed out by Conservative MPs since the May, 2011 federal election, all of them logged in our exclusive Sun News Network spending announcement database.

Heritage Minister and Winnipeg Conservative MP Shelly Glover was the overall handout champ last summer with 87 announcements totalling $209 million over the extra-long 16-week parliamentary summer.

Among backbench Conservatives, Moncton Conservative MP Robert Goguen was the 2013 spending champ with $5.2 million doled out over 11 different spending announcements.
