Jacquelyn and Patrick Mitchell lost a lot during last year’s devastating flood, but what – or rather who – they gained was so much more precious.

Their daughter Hana, who turns one on Saturday, was born June 21, 2013 while her parents were evacuated to a friend’s house from their Elbow Park home.

“We went to our friends’ house thinking we were going to get to go home the next day... and went to the hospital, thought everything was OK, had the baby, and found out about five hours after she was born that the house had eight feet of water in it,” Jacquelyn said.

“It was unbelievable — the first picture I saw of the house was our basement covered with muddy gross water and a baby doll floating on top,” she said, becoming emotional.

As they live a block from the river, they didn’t think it was conceivable it would flood, said Patrick when describing the difficult decision to evacuate to friends, who live close to the hospital.
