KINGSTON, Ont. – Via Rail’s Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal route was shut down for about five hours Sunday after one of its trains struck and killed a pedestrian around noon outside of Kingston.

"The incident happened 20 minutes after the train left the Kingston station," VIA spokesman Mylene Belanger said. "It was eastbound so this was a train that left Toronto at 9:25 a.m. (Sunday) and it had just left the Kingston station at 11:56 a.m. when the incident happened and the pedestrian was hit."

All Via trains were halted while Kingston Police investigated the death but resumed operations about 5 p.m.

There were 206 Ottawa-bound and 189 Montreal-bound passengers on the train involved.

"We are very sad at the situation," said Belanger. "Our thoughts go out to the victim and his or her family as well and to the locomotion engineer."
