TORONTO — A thoroughbred racehorse and exercise rider both died after the three-year-old filly suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the rider, track officials say.

Woodbine Entertainment Group says the deadly incident occurred early Tuesday on a small track used for light workouts within the facility.

“It was unfortunately just a terrible, freak accident,” Jamie Martin, Woodbine Entertainment Group’s executive vice-president of racing, said as he offered condolences to the dead man’s family and friends.

He said the horse, Tawney’s Wish, appeared to be in good health when Mourad Boudraa, a licensed exercise rider, took the filly out for a light jaunt at 6 a.m.

Moments later the horse’s heart failed.

Martin said horses either collapse or bolt when they suffer a heart attack and, in this case, Tawney’s Wish suddenly took off through the outer fence before dropping dead.

It’s believed Boudraa was trapped beneath Tawney’s Wish when she hit the ground.

Neither the horse nor the rider survived.
