A man who fell asleep next to a northern Ontario trail woke up to a bear biting his hand, police say.

The 29-year-old man from First Nation Territory of Muskrat Dam was sleeping next to a trail near Sioux Lookout at 9:23 p.m. on Wednesday when the bear woke him up.

The bear tried to drag the man into a wooded area, but was scared off by a witness who hit the bear with a rock, Ontario Provincial Police said.

The man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at hospital and released.
