TORONTO -- Mayor Rob Ford is not homophobic, he's "spendaphobic," he claims.

Ford has been under fire for refusing to join a standing ovation at council earlier this week for volunteers and city staff involved in World Pride and then, a day later, being the lone vote against a request for a staff report on the feasibility of allocating 25% of shelter beds to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth in an existing youth shelter.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam called Ford "homophobic" in the wake of his behaviour at council.

"Let's talk about how much money I've saved the taxpayers and I got subways built and I contracted out garbage. You don't want to talk about that, do ya?" Ford told reporters Friday when asked to respond to the allegation he's homophobic. "People are concerned about their pocketbooks and the taxes that I've saved.

"I got spendaphobia, I got spendphobia - spending hard-earned tax dollars."
