An order to transfer former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr from a federal prison to a provincial jail has been stayed pending an appeal to the Supreme Court.

In a decision issued Thursday, Court of Appeal of Alberta Justice Jack Watson granted the stay so that the federal government can seek leave to appeal to Canada's highest court the July 8 ruling that

ordered Khadr's transfer.

The stay application launched by the federal government was consented to by Khadr's lawyers so that Khadr can continue to make "good progress" in his current corrections rehabilitation plan at Bowden Institution.
